Big Lake interior painting, from lake homes to new builds

Interior painting in Big Lake covers two very different kinds of houses: older places on Big Lake and Lake Mitchell with knotty pine, stained trim and a lot of windows, and newer homes with builder paint and oak cabinets. Steve Greene Painting handles both. On the lake homes that usually means refinishing wood instead of covering it, and on the newer homes it means proper prep before cabinets and trim get enamel. We're rated 5 stars on Google, and the estimate is free.

Big Lake sits along Highway 10 in Sherburne County, and together with Monticello it marks the northwest edge of the area we serve. Lake homes take a beating from humidity swings, sun through big windows, and seasonal use. That shows up as faded stain on window frames, varnish gone cloudy or peeling, and ceiling stains from roof leaks and ice dams. Those problems are better solved by someone who refinishes wood than by a crew that only rolls walls.

Services

What Big Lake Interiors Need

01

Stain and Varnish Work

Knotty pine, cedar and stained trim that has gone orange or cloudy can be cleaned, sanded and re-coated. We'll tell you when wood should be refinished and when it's better painted.

02

Window Frame Staining

Big windows facing the lake take the most sun. Faded frames and sills get sanded, re-stained and sealed with fresh varnish.

03

Cabinet Enamel

Oak kitchens in newer Big Lake homes converted to a smooth, sprayed enamel finish that stands up to daily use.

04

Wall and Ceiling Painting

Full interior repaints with patching and sanding first, in a finish that wipes clean.

05

Water-Damaged Ceiling Restoration

Stains from ice dams or a winter leak at a seasonal place get sealed, repaired, re-textured and repainted so they don't come back through.

How It Works

From Estimate to Final Walk-Through

No handoffs and no surprise scope changes. Here's how a Big Lake job runs.

  1. 01

    Free In-Person Estimate

Steve looks at the actual surfaces in your Big Lake home, points out anything that will affect the finish, and gives you a clear scope before you commit.

  2. 02

    Prep, Then Paint

Patching, sanding, cleaning and priming come first. Floors and furniture get covered, and anything not being painted gets masked.

  3. 03

    Walk-Through and Cleanup

We clean up, then walk the finished work with you in good light. If something isn't right, it gets fixed before we leave.

Knotty Pine: Refinish It or Paint It?

It's one of the most common questions in lake country. Painted pine can look great, and it brightens a dark room fast. But once it's painted, the original wood is very hard to get back. If the pine is in good shape and you like the look, a careful clean, light sand and fresh clear coat can make it look new. If it's damaged, patched, or you want the room lighter, enamel over a stain-blocking primer is the way to go, since knots bleed through ordinary primer. Steve will walk through both options with you on site.

Steve + Team did a phenomenal job painting all 4400 sq ft interior painting while we were on vacation for a week, even finishing the job early! They fixed drywall errors (of which I was oblivious prior to him pointing out the flaws in the initial quote), touched up the enamel/molding, and did a beautiful job beyond our expectations even cleaning up so well after themselves. We were beyond impressed and would absolutely hire them again and recommend others do the same!

On my main level, Steve painted my oak kitchen cabinets, fixed my ceiling and then resprayed the entire ceiling. I added on to the project and had the downstairs painted. Steve and his team did a great job. I was impressed with the responsiveness and attention to detail. I couldn’t be happier with the results and would definitely recommend!

Our wooden window sills/frames needed some repair, and we hired Steve and his team to re-stain and varnish all the window frames in our house. I can't believe the difference. Many of them were faded and some looked like the wood was starting to rot. After Steve and his team were here, they look completely different. They did a great job, and I would definitely hire them again. Steve is very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain his process.

We hired Steve to white enamel our main level cabinets, molding and stairwell which initially were oak. The finished product was beautiful and he did such an exceptional job that we additionally had him paint our ceiling and walls. Steve is extremely knowledgeable, reliable and easy to work with. He is committed to providing high quality services at reasonable costs. We will definitely be using him again for future projects!

Frequently asked questions

Do you travel to Big Lake, MN?
Yes. Big Lake is inside our service area, which runs from Highway 10 on the north to Highway 5 on the south, with Highway 169 as the eastern edge and Highway 25 as the western edge. Big Lake and Monticello are its northwest corner.
Will knots bleed through if I paint my knotty pine?
They will if the wood isn't primed correctly. Pine knots carry resin and tannins that come through standard primer and latex paint as yellow or brown spots. We use a stain-blocking primer suited to knotty wood before any finish coat, and spot-prime the worst knots a second time.
Can you refinish varnished woodwork that has gone cloudy?
Often, yes. Cloudy or peeling varnish can usually be sanded back and re-coated without stripping to bare wood, as long as the stain underneath is in decent shape. Our stain and varnish work page explains how we approach it.
Can you paint a seasonal lake home while we're away?
Yes, as long as we can arrange access and the heat is on, since paint and varnish need the right temperature to cure. One of our Google reviewers had their whole interior painted while they were on vacation, and the job finished early.
How do I get a price for my Big Lake project?
Call (763) 228-5544 or send the estimate form. Steve prices every job after seeing it, because the condition of the existing wood and finish matters more than square footage.
